We all want to give back to our community, and savor that warm, fuzzy feeling we get when we support a cause that is important to us. But our resources are limited – especially our money. Maybe you’re a young student or just starting out in your career, or maybe you’re a parent saving up for your child’s future. Whatever your reason, you might not be in a place to make a financial contribution to the cause right now, but that’s OK. Just because you’re not in a position to donate money right now doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference. Here are some ways that you can show your support without donating money:
1. Volunteer your time. If you have some extra time and want to give back to your community, volunteering with a cause you care about can be extremely fulfilling and very meaningful for the organization and people you will be working with. Just be aware and upfront about your skill set and the amount of time you have to dedicate to the cause. Remember, not every cause will need volunteers, but there are many charities who base their business model on it, and would be very grateful for your service.
2. Donate goods. Bought some things you don’t need recently? Not using those textbooks from last year anymore? Why not donate them to a worthy cause! Many charities will accept in-kind donations of all types of goods – ranging from food to clothing to school supplies. If you really want to clean house, you can even have a garage sale for a cause.
3. Be an advocate. Are you passionate about a political or social justice issue? Then don’t be afraid to stand up for it! Get involved with local advocacy organizations or community groups and become active in your local political scene.
4. Fundraise for your cause. There are many ways to help a nonprofit raise money. You can start a crowdfunding campaign online, or you can organize an event. Events are a wonderful way to bring people together around a cause, and have a good time while you’re at it. You can plan a party, a marathon, or even a gaming event. Whatever you do – make it fun and make it meaningful.
